How Does the Stock Market
Work in Simple Terms?
Many lack basic understanding
of the components of the stock market. Although it can appear
complicated, it is actually quite simple. All it takes is a
little reading. Anyone is capable of grasping how does the
stock market work.
First, what is a stock? A
share of stock represents owning a piece of that company. Yes,
when you buy a share you are essentially becoming a partner in
the corporation. This is why they are called "public
corporations". Ownership is spread out among the general
public, including you.
Next, how do stocks trade?
For every stock there is a bid and an ask. The bid represents
the most someone is willing to pay for that share. The ask
represents the least someone is willing to accept to sell that
share. When they meet, you have a trade.
A trade is when the buyer and
seller meet on price and the transaction is done. This leads to
the next major term, a "quote". A quote simply is what
price the stock last sold at. This can change quite rapidly
seeing shares trade on a constant basis during market
hours.
The "price" of the stock is
the dollar figure cost of one share. All the shares added
together comprise the entire company. This is how a company's
value is determined. If you multiply the number of shares times
the last quote, that is the current value of the entire
company.
So, now that you understand
what a share, bid, ask and quote are, how do you go about
buying or selling a stock? A stock brokerage account is
required to enter the fray. There are many options out there
today. Most of them are "online brokerage accounts" allowing
for participation right on your computer.
The most important factor to
consider when selecting a brokerage account are the commissions
charged. These can vary widely. You don't want to lose all your
hard earned profits back to your broker through high
commissions. With the diverse array of brokerage accounts
available this is easy to avoid.
Now that you've learned the
basics of how does the stock market work you are ready to go to
the next step of researching and learning the various styles of
trading. There is a style suitable for every personality type.
